Father's Day, observed on the third Sunday of June, is a cherished occasion dedicated to recognizing and honouring the invaluable role fathers play in our families. This year, on June 18th, we have the opportunity to express our love, gratitude, and appreciation for the fathers who stand as pillars of strength in our lives.
History of Father's Day
The history of Father's Day can be traced back to the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd, a remarkable woman who realized the need to celebrate fathers alongside the widely recognized Mother's Day.The inception of Father's Day can be traced back to 1909 when Sonora Smart Dodd attended a sermon on Mother's Day, a holiday gaining recognition at the time. Inspired by the idea of honoring fathers, Sonora embarked on a mission to establish a day dedicated to celebrating paternal figures.
Sonora's father, William Jackson Smart, was a brave American Civil War veteran. After the tragic loss of her mother during childbirth, Sonora and her father embarked on a journey of resilience, love, and sacrifice as they raised her younger siblings together in Spokane, Washington.
Inspired by her father's unwavering dedication, Sonora approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance, urging them to commemorate her father's birthday, which fell on June 5th, as Father's Day. With the support of local religious leaders, the first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, coinciding with the birth month of Sonora's beloved father. In 1966, her vision gained official recognition when US President Lyndon B. Johnson declared the third Sunday of June as a day to honor and celebrate fathers nationwide.
